The raw computing fury of ArcGIS
I was granted a license by my university to access ArcGIS, a more powerful spatial analysis/mapping tool than QGIS, the program I had been using. For my uses, though, ArcGIS has a steeper learning curve than did QGIS, and I’ve spent my research time for the past two weeks just trying to build up on the new program to where I was on the old.
I’m nearly at that point, and I’m now able to create animations using ArcGIS. More importantly, I’m able to do so with my expanded dataset, which includes all newspapers in the Oehlerts Colorado newspaper directory through 1899.
So here it is: A GIF of the newspapers of Colorado from 1859 through 1899, with one dot representing a town with a newspaper.
